IMD Issues Red Alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar as Active Monsoon System Triggers Widespread Heavy Rainfall Across India

The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar as an active monsoon system driven by a low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal is expected to trigger heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds across several regions of India over the next four to five days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar, warning of intense spells of rain at isolated locations as an active monsoon system is expected to bring widespread rainfall across large parts of the country over the next four to five days. The weather warning comes as a well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal strengthens rainfall activity across multiple regions of India.

According to the IMD, the active monsoon spell is being driven by the well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal. Under its influence, central India is likely to experience widespread rainfall, while several states are expected to receive heavy to extremely heavy rainfall through next week.

The weather office has forecast isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Konkan and Gujarat from July 4 to July 7, Madhya Maharashtra between July 4 and July 6, Saurashtra and Odisha on July 4 and July 5, and West Madhya Pradesh on July 4.

In northern India, Haryana, Punjab, Delhi and Chandigarh are expected to receive isolated to scattered rainfall on July 4 and July 5, followed by another spell on July 9 and July 10. More widespread rainfall is likely between July 6 and July 8. Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are forecast to witness widespread rainfall throughout the period from July 4 to July 10, while Jammu and Kashmir is expected to receive intermittent showers during the same duration.

The IMD also warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds with speeds ranging from 40 to 60 kilometres per hour across parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Punjab and Delhi. Similar weather conditions are expected over Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and the Vidarbha region during the coming days.

Southern states, including Kerala, Coastal Karnataka, Lakshadweep, Telangana and parts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, are also expected to receive widespread rainfall as the active monsoon system continues to influence weather conditions across the region.

Separately, the IMD issued a red alert for several districts of Odisha, including Sambalpur, Boudh, Kalahandi, Subarnapur and Angul, warning of extremely heavy rainfall during the next 24 hours.

The latest weather alerts indicate that the active monsoon system is set to impact multiple regions across India simultaneously, raising the risk of intense rainfall, thunderstorms, strong winds and lightning. The IMD has advised close monitoring of weather conditions as heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected to continue across several states over the coming days.
